How Surety Works

Unlike insurance, a surety bond protects the obligee — not your business. If the principal fails to perform under the terms of the bond, the surety compensates the obligee, and the principal is then responsible for repaying the surety for any losses.

Our insurance professionals can help you find the right bond or insurance product for your business needs.

Principal The person or business purchasing the bond and promising to fulfill an obligation.
Obligee The entity — often a government agency or client — that requires the bond.
Surety The company backing the bond financially, guaranteeing the obligee is paid if the principal fails to perform.
